Two Sentence Story

I'm a small city kid who somehow found himself teaching engineering in the fourth biggest city in North America. I'm living a life that I never even imagined as possible when I grew up. I want to help others find their path to their happy place.

What I Do

I teaching engineering design at the top engineering school in Canada. I have 1,200 students in my class. I have taught about 20,000 engineers in my career.

School Days

Right out of high school I earned a bachelors degree in Engineering Physics from the University of Saskatchewan, Canada.

As an adult I earned a Masters degree in Higher Education.

Proud Moments

I teach brilliant students who are destine to make the world a better place. I feel that I'm a small part of each of their success.

My Family

I'm married to another engineering professor. We work in the same department. I have three wonderful sons who I'm hoping will follow in their parents footsteps.

Inspirations

My mom grew up with 10 siblings. She was the only one to finish high school. My grandparents had to trade chickens from the farm to pay her way through school. After graduating she went to teachers college and became a teacher. She feed my curiosity for STEM my whole life.

My dad only completed grade 6 before he had to leave school to work. Despite this he always respected education and worked so hard to make sure I had the educational opportunities he never had.

Hobbies

I love LEGO. It was a go to toy as a kid and I continue to play LEGO with my kids...whenever I can convince them to play with me.

Volunteer Opportunities

I am willing to be contacted by educators for possible speaking engagements in schools or in after school programs or summer camps., I am willing to serve as science fair judge or other temporary volunteer at a local school., I am willing to be contacted about potential job shadowing by interested students., I am willing to be interviewed by interested students via email.

Overcoming Doubt

I was only the second member of my family to go to university and am still the only engineer. The university campus seemed like a totally different world with which I had no experience. At the time I did my best to fit in primarily by hiding who I really was. When I graduated and moved into industry I continued to hide myself. At work I was an engineer; only at home was I allowed to be Indigenous. When I became a professor I finally found the strength to be an Indigenous Engineer. I was anxious and unsure of myself, but I have persevered. Now I do everything I can to make other Indigenous students feel welcome and part of a community. I don't want anyone to have to deny their identify like I did early in my life.

Embracing Identity

Find community and be an ally to other communities. There is strength in unity.

Acting as an Ally

A wise friend, a member of the Black community, once told me, "This isn't the suffering Olympics." Everyone has their own identify struggles and empathizing with another group does not take away from your own struggles. However it can make things better for everyone.

Obstacles Helpful for Youth

Many Indigenous communities are struggling with infrastructure. It is only when we have more Indigenous engineering voices that those struggles with be addressed. So if you want to help your or other Indigenous communities, engineering is an excellent way to do so.

Comments about K-12 STEM

The camps and workshops were not something available to me. I purchased my first computer only after I started university.

Other Parts on the Path

I never even considered becoming a university professor. I didn't think it was possible for me. It was only after being inspired and supported by my wife that I had the courage to undertake this path.
