Two Sentence Story

I am currently an Engineering Professor and love my job because it keeps me connected with students and active in research. Both os these keeps me excited, motivated, and passionate towards what I do.

What I Do

Teaching and research at the university involving engineering students

Why STEM?

I was fascinated by how chemistry can be used to make materials. This helped pursue engineering as a career.

School Days

All my school education was in India including my undergraduate BS degree.

My Day At Work

Mostly working with my undergraduate and graduate students on course work and research work and guiding and mentoring then in related field.

Best Part

Helping next geaneration students and active in research to invent new materils for a variety of applications.

Proud Moments

Becoming a member of NAE and inventing cermic composites that is used in jet engines for improving efficiency and reducing environmental damage.

Challenges

Inventing better materials such as ceramics that are not brittle and can be used at very high temperatures such as in jet engines and fuel cells.

My Family

I have a wife and 3 daughters. All have BS and Graduate degrees. My wife worked as a teacher in high school, 2 daughters are physicians, and the third works in a medical hospital in a reklated field. We have 3 grand children at present.

Dreams and Goals

Continue to work educationing next generation of engineers and pursue research in the new area of materials for quantum devices and computers. Also, help NAE in any ways I can by serving on committees.

My parents and grand parents who encouraged me to pursue STEM related career.

My Advice

Be curious, develop habits for life-long learning, perseverance, hard work and pursue your passion.

Hobbies

Sports, traveling, reading, learning about different societies, and helping others as needed.

Overcoming doubt and discouragement/Imposter Syndrome

Overcoming Doubt

One will face people who will be encouraging and discouraging. Try to rationalize it and if it make sense then work on overcoming doughts and discouragement. I had on occasion my supervisor was not supportinve of my goals. So I tried to find more on the resons and found that there was a bias in assessment. So I moved on and continued to pursue my goals and ultimately succeeded.

Companies Mitigate Challenges

A process of fair assessment based on more objective criteria rather than subjective will be helpful to an individual to overcome obstacles in a technical career. Also, hard work consistent with the goals is a prerequisite for overcoming any challenge.
