Two Sentence Story

I'm a professional engineer that came from a challenging background as a youth, but has leveraged mentors and role models to succeed in the corporate world. Just as important, I like to have fun and balance my professional life out with active hobbies and interests.

Close Up

What I Do

I currently lead a global business organization focusing on advanced materials which are ultimately used in extreme environments (like hot and high pressure - space shuttles, car engines, wind turbines, etc.). I had seventeen years in engineering and decided to use my knowledge in the business world. I still spend everyday discussing very technical topics and working through engineering-related, technical, and financial problems.

Why STEM?

I initially chose STEM in high school because it was perceived to be difficult, and there wasn't anyone in my family that had gotten a technical degree (very few actually had obtained a degree, period). I originally set out to pursue nuclear engineering because I was very fascinated by chemistry and was a fan of Richard Feynman, science fiction, and stories around nuclear energy. I changed my degree field once entering school because it wasn't a busy time for nuclear engineering as a field.

School Days

I attended the University of Michigan - Ann Arbor, completing dual-degrees in Chemical Engineering (BSE) and American Cultures (BA), the latter with a focus on Native American studies. After being in the professional workplace for two years, I decided to return to school and pursue/obtain a Master's Degree in Manufacturing Engineering, with a focus on Lean and Reconfigurable Manufacturing.

My Day At Work

A typical day at work consists of business strategy discussions internal to our organization, a handful of customer interactions and meetings, and multiple 1:1 discussions with employees at all levels of our organization. Approximately 2-3 times per month, I'll travel either domestic or international to visit key customers.

Best Part

I've been able to move through multiple roles in my career, and in each case my company has been fully encouraging. I've had many "careers" internal to a single employer, which is unique in today's time.

Proud Moments

Developing and launching several products that I see on a near-daily basis, that gives me pride that I'm making a contribution to the world.

Challenges

Migration into a business role has been very difficult, not having an MBA, but I've been able to leverage colleagues and most-importantly my team.

My Family

I grew up in a large family in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Both of my parents passed away when I was a child, but I was very fortunate to have a step-father that willingly became my guardian and saved my life. In current times, I have a partner and reside in Pittsburgh, PA.

Dreams and Goals

Shorter-term, I'd like to gain some additional experience in a business-related field internal to my current company. Longer-term, I would like to pivot into a non-profit leadership role, potentially in the STEM field, and contribute to society outside of consumable products and technology.

Inspirations

Greatest influence has been my step-father, who was a professional when I was growing up, so I had a good example of how/what to do in life. My biological family has an incredible work ethic and values, but mostly work in blue collar careers.

My Advice

Don't be afraid to experiment and take time determining your ultimate career path, as you don't want to end up in one that's undesirable and doesn't bring you joy!

Hobbies

Listening to and attending music shows, skateboarding, record collecting, reading, snowboarding, hiking, traveling around the world as much as possible.

Volunteer Opportunities

I am willing to be contacted by educators for possible speaking engagements in schools or in after school programs or summer camps., I am willing to be interviewed by interested students via email.

Overcoming Doubt

I came from a family that had no STEM-related career experience, so I sought out people that did in my hometown as I was growing up. This was through my high school counselors, shadowing local city engineers, and signing up for summer camps whenever possible. Even in my current career, I encounter imposter syndrome, but I seek out people to learn from and mentors that are encouraging.

Mastering Academic Challenges

I went to a rural school that was low-performing, in an economically-challenged part of the United States. When I was in undergraduate the initial transition was very difficult, I was always behind and my classmates had much better educational backgrounds. I ended up spending a lot of time studying, seeking tutors and mentors, and putting in significant amounts of work. It has definitely paid off but was very stressful at times.

Making Connections

I've moved several times in my career, both in the United States and around the world. In each place I've tried hard to find a local community of people that have similar interests and life goals. Inside my company, I've been an active member of the Native American Council, which is filled with people from backgrounds similar to my own. I do always have 1-2 mentors, and am mentoring 2-5 individuals at any given time. I learn from mentees as much as they do from me!

Acting as an Ally

I've always sought out individuals and mentors that have similar backgrounds and experiences as myself - they are great for discussing situations around "power." I do seek to help those that are of lesser power, particularly specific communities in my city.

Obstacles Helpful for Youth

As a youth, my parents both passed away and I was a ward of the court. I was incredibly fortunate to have a step-father that took over guardianship, which essentially saved my life. Regardless, I embraced a mentality that I needed to do as much as possible to decide my ultimate fate, especially given the environment I was in (low-income, siblings that had legal/crime issues, etc.). I also took advantage of the fact that my step-father was a role model and positive guide with respect to careers and education.

Companies Mitigate Challenges

I'm a firm believer in the power of the pipeline - there needs to be organizational reach deep into the educational system. Presence even at the elementary level is very powerful, as children see role models and opportunities that they are not exposed to on a routine basis. K-12 STEM education in very powerful.

Other Parts on the Path

Following 17 years in a manufacturing-related STEM career involving both engineering and manufacturing/plant leadership roles, I leveraged a Lean Six Sigma Master Black Belt program to pivot into a business leadership role without an MBA, where I've been advancing for the last 6 years in a highly-technical STEM business. My career path has included roles as environmental, manufacturing, and process engineer within the engineering field. In the management field, I've been both a technical and hourly operations supervisor, product and plant manager, division and business unit manufacturing director (over multiple factories). Most-recently, I've moved into business leadership, managing multiple business portfolios and currently landing in a leadership role over an entire division's business operations.
